This 1.5 oz (42 gram) chocolate chip paleo cookie is 220 calories, 16 grams of fat and 13 grams of sugar. Paleo junk food is still junk food… Not to mention our paleolithic ancestors were not eating cookies. It’s not only paleo junk food that’s an issue, but ready-made meals too.
As a result, I can look at a plate of food and give you a pretty good idea of how many carbs are in it. But, I know that most people don’t have that experience and counting carbs in foods is a brand new experience. Carbs can be sneaky too. For example, a tablespoon of heavy whipping cream may say it has zero carbs on the label, but it has .5g per ounce (depending on brand).
What are the long-term (one year or longer) effects of, and are there any safety issues related to, the ketogenic diet? Do the diet’s health benefits extend to higher risk individuals with multiple health conditions and the elderly? For which disease conditions do the benefits of the diet outweigh the risks?
I accept that slow progress is PROGRESS. I take progress pictures to motivate me. I only shop the perimeter at the market. I consider eating as nourishing not as a reward. I adjust my food according to how my body is reacting. If I am stalled, I eat less calories or cut dairy. Most importantly, I treat myself with love and patience.
Television chef Pete Evans, known as Paleo Pete, has released a range of packaged ready-made meals for those trying to “fit in meals between looking after the kids” (his words). Packaged foods are, of course, the polar opposite of the paleo premise… Especially Pete’s approach to paleo, which was all about cooking with fresh, local food and involving the kids as well.
Because for many years we have been told fat is so bad for you. I don’t even think we realize that is still engrained in our brains! My test was ground beef and butter for a few days in a row. I always spiced up the ground beef with a small amount of onion or garlic or both. I cooked the ground beef first. Then I would serve myself about a cup of ground beef in a bowl and top it with about 3 tablespoons of butter. I love the salted KerryGold butter myself but any real butter will do.
Research suggests that people who follow a keto diet do drop pounds. A 2013 analysis published in the British Journal of Nutrition (BJN) that evaluated 13 studies found that people who adhered to it lost more weight than those who followed a low-fat diet, at least in the short term.
Yesterday, I had my 2 cups coffee (with butter and cream) in the morning, ground beef with butter for lunch and dinner. Then I ate about 4 crunchy pork rinds. I drank plenty of water and took my supplements. I am down another 1.5 pounds today! This is what my tracking looks like.
